Rally Challenges Stock Exchange Subsidies

A group of elected officials, labor, business and community leaders cited the planned $1.1 billion subsidy package for the New York Stock Exchange as a compelling argument for reforming the city's and state's economic development policies at a noontime press conference and rally October 19 on Wall Street.

City University of New York faculty union leader Nancy Romer was one of several labor and community leaders and elected officials who demanded reconsideration of the planned $1 billion-plus subsidy package for the New York Stock Exchange at a lower Manhattan rally Oct. 19, 2000 organized with help from Good Jobs New York.

The rally was "interrupted" by Rev. Billy O'Nair, self-proclaimed chaplain to the over-privileged, and his cohorts, "Billionaires for a Better Trading Floor." Rally participants, including City Council members Steve Di Brienza and Guillermo Linares (directly behind billionaire sign) eventually booed Rev. Billy off the stage.
